The Green Door Story
The Green Door is the creative outlet of Amy Friedman, an Apalachicola resident who hails from Rhode Island and has happily made a new home in the beautiful and unique Florida Panhandle town of Apalachicola. Amy was living in Alpharetta, Georgia and happened across Apalachicola a few years ago while on a trip to the coast and quickly decided this was where she wanted to live and paint, She and her husband found a great second home in town and Amy proceeded to make it over in her own style.
Amy was creating art and selling it in one of the area's nicest shops while also spending time working on her second home, often involving her husband Andrew deeply into renovation and decorating projects while she made their Apalachicola home one that has been featured on the Annual Historic Apalachicola Amy has had her home in the Historic Apalachicola Home And Garden Tour sponsored by Trinity Episcopal Church. Home and Garden Tour, sponsored by Trinity Episcopal Church. In 2008, Amy decided -- much to Andrew's relief -- that the house was "finished" and it was time to move here full time and open her own shop, a place that would reflect her artistic vision and her sense of fun and whimsy.
Amy and a friend originally opened The Green Door in a small building in the Historic Bowery that had been renovated a few years before. However, the needs of the Green Door and Amy's need for larger studio space soon necessitated a move to more spacious quarters. Amy was lucky enough to find a space in one of the most beautifully restored commercial buildings in the area, the Historic Orman Building and on May 01, 2009, The Green Door swung open at 32 Avenue D. Amy's partner decided that the Green Door had grown larger than she anticipated and left in order to pursue full time retirement and relaxation and Amy's husband Andrew stepped up his involvement, helping Amy with the business chores so she is still free to create the artwork that is at the heart of the Green Door's appeal. The Gallery now occupies the ground floor of the beautiful Orman building located on the corner of Market Street and Avenue D, right in the middle of downtown Apalachicola.
